Something I probably never would’ve really considered when looking to purchase a set of headphones, earbuds or headset was whether or not they were compatible with my devices. It turns out things aren’t as straightforward as I thought they were, as many devices have compatibility issues with certain smart phones or tablets. You won’t find products advertising their compatibility issues, though, so if you want to make sure the device you’re considering purchasing will be compatible with your smart phone or tablet you have to be really careful to take a look at the reviews of the products. On this site we put together reviews of some of the most popular products on the market for you; if they do have issues with compatibility you’ll find them in these reviews.

These days there are two major competing operating systems which are used in almost all smart phones or tablets – Apple iOS and Android. If you want a Bluetooth wireless headphone, earbuds, or headset that will work well with your device you’ll want to pay careful attention to any compatibility issues. If you’re one of the few people using a phone with a different operating system, such as a Windows phone, you’re probably going to have to rely more on trial and error as there simply aren’t a lot of reviews available for these alternate operating systems.

Compatibility Issues with Android

Android is the operating system of choice in more smart phones and tablets than any other on the planet. For that reason most headphones, earbuds, or headsets connect quite well with Android devices, as most manufacturers spend a lot of time testing their product to work with these devices. It’s also probably got a lot to do with the open nature of the Android operating system which makes it easier for manufacturers to integrate their products with it and test them. In the reviews I’ve done on this site I didn’t come across any products of note that were not fully compatible with Android devices.

Compatibility Issues with IOS

While Apple iPhones and iPads are very popular – they still represent a much smaller part of the market than Android smart phones and tablets. Again, it has a lot to do with the open nature of the Android operating system; a multitude of manufacturers use this operating system because of its open nature. Apple is very protective of its proprietary technology and it does not allow manufacturers and developers easy access to their system. This makes it more challenging for manufacturers to create devices that are fully compatible with Apple products and you’ll find this in the reviews on this site. There are at least a couple of headphones, earbuds, or headsets that we’ve reviewed on which customers have had complaints about compatibility issues with Apple devices. In some cases they simply won’t connect at all, or the connection tends to get lost.

Compatibility Issues with Windows Phone

There really isn’t much to go on when it comes to Windows phone – as we mentioned in the introduction of this article most people that review headphones, earbuds, or headsets have devices with more popular operating system such as Android or IOS. For that reason, if you do own a smart phone or tablet that uses the Windows operating system it’s probably best to make sure it has a good warranty or return policy. That way, if you find there are compatibility issues with the device you purchased you can take it back and try again with another device.

Considering Bluetooth Standards

In another information article on this site we discuss the evolution of Bluetooth standards over the years and how they can affect the effectiveness of the connection between your wireless devices. There isn’t much point in buying a set of headphones, earbuds, or a headset with Bluetooth 4.0 technology if you’re smart phone or tablet isn’t up to that standard yet. The connection will only be as good as the weakest link so it’s probably a good idea to make sure you know the Bluetooth standard that you’re smart phone or tablet uses before purchasing any headphones, earbuds, or a headset. If you do have a phone or tablet with the newer Bluetooth standard then it’s definitely a good idea to consider looking for headgear that does have this Bluetooth 4.0 standard, as it does provide a much more reliable connection.

Compatibility Is Important

I think the bottom line is that you shouldn’t just assume that a set of headphones, earbuds, or headset that you purchase will work well with your existing smart phone or tablet. It’s important to do a little research or at least take a good look around this site in order to find out which one will work well with your existing device. Taking the time to do a little reading can save you a lot of time in the long run and potentially a lot of money when you’re making that final purchase decision.
